Managing partner
Several years ago, when Law Bulletin Publishing Company named Gene Murphy to its annual “40 Under 40” list of 40 outstanding young Illinois lawyers, they quoted from one nomination that said: “His skills as both a civil and criminal trial lawyer are extraordinary, and are those of a litigator well beyond his age.” Gene is a little older now, and has since been named a “Leading Lawyer” in Chicago Lawyer’s Top Lawyers of Illinois listing. But the same idea holds true: he is a tough, smart trial lawyer.
Since graduating from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1987, Gene has worked in every kind of public and private legal practice, serving as a trial lawyer and supervising other trial attorneys. His record of accomplishments is long and impressive:
Fresh out of law school, he worked in the General Counsel’s office at Arthur Anderson, advising a global business entity on national and international business operations and formations while also advising and protecting clients from competitor lawsuits and attempts to annex practice groups.
For almost ten years as Assistant State’s Attorney at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, he prosecuted financial crime, fraud, and racketeering cases against corporate executives and business owners, union and government officials, and organized crime figures.
He headed the litigation practice at two Chicago-area litigation boutiques, and in 2004, helped found the Chicago office of Bryan Cave – one of the 35 largest law firms in the world – as a commercial litigation partner.
Gene is nationally recognized, and has extensive experience representing publicly held companies, private businesses, and government entities, having taken over fifty jury trials and hundreds of bench trials to verdict. He frequently lectures on commercial litigation topics and was a founding member of the Business Divorce Committee of the Chicago Bar Association. He has conducted and supervised corporate internal investigations for “Fortune 100” companies, closely held corporations and partnerships, and several Chicago-area municipalities. He also advises clients on government and regulatory issues and develops strategies to resolve those matters short of litigation.
His clients include some of the most prominent businesses and individuals in the Chicagoland area. He has a wealth of experience in corporate governance, as well as litigation and trial strategy, and serves as lead trial counsel for his valued clients.
Gene’s clients get a tough, smart, sophisticated litigator who combines an insider’s knowledge of Illinois state and federal courts and their judges with genial Irish charm. He’s a member of both the prestigious Chicago Inn of Court, and The Irish Fellowship. He has also served as budget director for the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Gene knows the courts and the law, and is absolutely committed to the best interests of his clients.
